Don's love of wood working and playing the fiddle came together about 6 years ago. He started by reading everything he could about violinmaking. Eventually he started on a violin by trying to make a rib. A few months later a violin emerged. As a fiddler he was elated with his accomplishment acoustically and was hooked on building instruments.
Not being formerly trained, he took time to study many old Italian instruments and developed a style of work very similar to the makers of Milan and northern Italy. Don was encouraged by his peers to continue working in the style that came naturally to him.
While keeping a close eye on acoustical principals Don had the freedom to create and manipulate other aspects of violin making. The results produced edgework, tool marks and other working methods found in the old classic instruments. Acoustically he has never been disappointed and the results of bringing wood back to life to make music give a great sense of accomplishment.
